Gargee'an, Ramadan tradition of Iranian Arabs

Gargee'an is a tradition of Iranian Arabs in Khuzestan Province. It takes place in the mid of Islam’s holy fasting month of Ramadan.

Gargee'an is marked with children striking two stones together, singing traditional songs and going door-to-door to receive sweets and money called 'Eidi’, which is given as part of a celebration of a holiday, from neighbors.

It has been registered as a national intangible cultural heritage of Iranian Arabs.

There are different theories on the origin of this tradition, with the most prominent one being celebrating the birth anniversary of Imam Hassan (AS), the second Shia Imam and the grandson of Prophet Muhammad [PBUH].

Iran is home to different ethnic groups such as Persians, Kurds, Lurs, Arabs, Baluchs, Turkmen, and Azeri.

While Persian is the official language of Iran, those groups speak different languages.
